This is a search for American stories.

Of all kinds of people. From all corners of the country and everywhere in between. Of what they’re experiencing, making, wondering, fearing and hoping.

The inspiration for my search? A project that started more than 85 years ago. From 1935 to 1944, the US government-sponsored FSA program hired photographers and writers to "introduce America to Americans." Those photos created a time capsule from that era that we still open today. And those photographers inspired me endlessly. They instilled in me a sense of obligation to document strange times. And this is certainly a strange time.

As I’ve traveled the country, I’ve met people of all ways of life and with all different points of view. Are we as divided as we seem? Sometimes. But we’re all living through these precarious times together, and when we have to come together—or at least relate to each other—we find a way.

This is a quest to meet some of them and to share their stories—one person, one story, at a time. I’ll go wherever American roads take me, for as long as it takes.
