Barton Creek Greenbelt in Austin is a fantastic 8-mile path that's just right there in the city. You can park, walk on, and be immediately surrounded by limestone cliffs, a creek, and lush greenery. It’s fantastic and quickly became one of my go-to spots in Austin.
On a walk there one day, I met Nate and Bianca and their dogs—Maya, Doug the Pug, and Lily. Bianca was born and raised in Austin and says she tries to come here daily. I asked how the pandemic had been going for the two of them, and they explained that they’d spent most of it in recovery. Turns out they met in the after-program they attended after completing voluntary in-patient rehab for heroin addiction. Both had gotten to the point where they just wanted to be done with using. Bianca said she thought she would only be in rehab for two weeks, but she stayed five months. Nate was also in a while, and he said his family has been really supportive. Bianca said about half her family has been supportive. Some prefer to ignore it.
Nonetheless, they are both really proud of making it to the other side—as they should be!! They are amazing people and so generous to share their stories. The more we can talk openly about addiction, the more comfortable people will be asking for help. So many of us are struggling in one way or another right now. I think it’s important to remember you can never know everything that's going on with someone else, but most people are trying their very best. Sending warmest wishes for great days ahead to these two and their adorable pups.
